Baroque Era
During the Baroque Era, the history of the Western Art came together with the 17th century. Though its earliest manifestations were recalled in the 16th century, large amounts of achievements did not occur until the 18th century. The movement rebelled from the traditional Renaissance art, which was orderly and symmetrically balanced, while Baroque art was more grandiose and rich with curves rather than symmetry to display a dramatic effect. It would contrast values to make the art stand out. Their art was a lot more emotional and dramatic, and they would work in larger scale and paint freely. The art would include detail, but the artist usually used his brush “freely” to express the emotion in the painting. Colors were lighter and were bright. Though the painting would usually show perception, it wasn’t focused on, which would not show much detail. Baroque artists not only painted, but also would build architecturally in a grandiose style, usually to glorify a king or queen (Baroque Art Movement).

Bacchanal before a Statue of Pan by Nicolas Poussin, 1631-1633
As seen in the art, realistic values and extreme detail were not present. Baroque artist’s intent wasn’t to try and paint something that looked as real as possible, but to express their emotions in their own individual ways. Nicolas Poussin was born in Les Andelys, Normandy and considered his artwork baroque. The colors are very bright and contrast well with each other to express emotion (Nicolas Poussin).
