Impressionism Movement
Impressionism started in 1874 by a group of artists that were called Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, Printmakers, etc. They came together in Paris to form an exhibition of art, which ultimately started the Impressionism movement. The independent painters though all different, painted in airy, sketch like appearances of modern life. Some critics attacked it for being "unfinished", but many others liked the art, especially for the wealthy (Heilbrunn). Claude Monet was one of the real founders of movement and cause of the name. He was a French artist born on 1840 (Heilbrunn, Claude).

Though many artists of the movement had similar style, Claude’s was especially airy and wispy. The colors of the painting are light and cool. His brushwork is very much like other artists in the movement, which is more spontaneous and loose. Also, the focus on detail is non-existent in the movement, really focusing on the beauty of the colors and landscape. The content of much of the artwork like this one focuses on nature and beauty, usually involving women. The painting like many in the era, is modern landscape of a coast where the artist was (Heilbrunn, Claude).
